Artist Biography

Eric Wendorf's professional artist career began in 1982 while attending Ball State University.  Originally enrolled in the architecture program, he quickly changed his major study to fine art in order to balance his busy schedule swimming on the college swim team and racing professionally in cycling.

Working in all the subjects the art department offered, he created, displayed, and sold much of his earlier work until he became more focused and refined with drawing and printmaking.  It was in these two departments that much of his finest work was produced that made him well known in the local communities and art galleries, including his own called the Spinal Tap Gallery (named after one of his popular sculptures) but was later changed to the Courthouse Gallery.  In 1987, he graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Drawing and Printmaking.

Finally, after more than 20 years of hibernation, his portfolios have been released once again to the public for viewing and purchase.

Artist Statement

I once saw a bumper sticker that read "If you can read this, thank a teacher."  If I were to think of a bumper sticker to share this same type of message with everyone who inspired me to create my work, it would be larger than the car itself, so I opted to create this feature on iD Arts Magazine instead.

I like to work quickly when I draw and drawing with pencils never seemed to cover the large formats I choose, so I experimented with various types of media and even mixed or blended them to fill in the color swatches I preferred while offering the translucent and transparent effects needed for particular pieces.  However, this once more proved fruitless due to the chemical factors of the media and material on which I was drawing.  It wasn't until my professor mentioned that what I was looking for was used to mark cattle and could be found in feed and seed stores.  My quest in finding boxes of many colors didn't take long and neither did my love for using them for years to come.
