Artist Statement

Creativity has always flowed through me no matter what task is at hand.  For many years, it lay buried just beneath the surface, straining to break free of one-dimensional logic and structure.  I have finally unleashed my gifts and found great pleasure in sharing my mulit-dimensional vision of our wonderful, crazy world.

How I create my work . . .
Since I lead a very hectic life working a full-time job, with a husband, children and grandchildren, I take small, odd moments to sketch out ideas I have.  I usually keep a sketch pad and pencils at hand so I can write down ideas.   Each day at lunch, I find a quiet corner at the sub shop and sketch and color using artist's color pencils, pastels, and archival quality ink.  These media are portable and don't make a big mess.  At first it was a little embarassing (assuming everyone was looking at ME), but I was wrong.  People really don't notice and it is wonderful to immerse in art for 30-40 minutes each day.

Working in such small time increments forces me to concentrate on particular areas and think thru my works.  Focusing on the main subject and focal point has improved my composition.  I used to worry a lot about the background and all the different parts of the artwork, but now I get the focal point perfected and then look to the background.  If you think about it, that's how you want someone to view your pieces so it make perfect sense to create that way.

The best advice I can give any budding artist is to take classes whenever you can, read, watch and practice art all you can.  THE most important advice is to network with other artists, share creativity and feed your own. Visit art events. Try different colors...purple, red and yellow palm trees!!!???  The colors are there!  Use them.  Sketch outlines of objects and play with how light and color interact with each shape.

Enjoy!
