SPARK served
as the program for the first annual Explosion of the Arts street
festival that was
sponsored by A City of Expression in the Five Points area of
Jacksonville in 1991.
SPARK
contained a brief article, the schedule of events for the festival, and
advertising. The name SPARK was created by
Steve Gelsi (iD Magazine's Editorial Editor), who was writing under the pseudonym Matt
Chelsea.
The A City of
Expression logo shown on the back page was created by Creative Director Clair Mead
Hartmann. It represents an explosion and fits nicely with the Explosion of the
Arts festival name, which was the creation of A City of Expression founder Michael Miller. SPARK
ignited the Big Bang for both the festival and iD Magazine.
Clair's explosion logo was borrowed and altered for use on the life ring logo for the online
edition of iD
Magazine (the old logo can be viewed by a link on the Home page). SPARK was
printed on 11" x 17" paper and folded to be sized 8 1/2" x
11".
