Artist Statement
A native of Brasil, I graduated from the University of Florida in 1985, and set up a professional studio in Micanopy,Florida. I continue my education by attenting workshops at Penland School of Crafts and Arrowmont School, as well as workshops by professional artists that will propel me toward new ideas.
I have won many awards throughout the Southeast, and my work is now collected worldwide. It has been featured in "The Best of Pottery" and "The Contemporary Potter" by Rockford Publishers. I am a member of The Gainesville Artisans Guild Gallery and Florida Craftsmen Gallery.
My pots are illustrated with images that have been described as fun, engaging, sometimes irreverent and open to interpretation. Each piece is either thrown on the wheel, slump-molded, and sometimes both techniques are used in the same piece. The images are painted on raw clay with slips and engobes, the pot is then fired to bisque temperature in order to stabilize the colors, and it is subsequently glazed and fired to 2100°. The result is an artful piece that is also food safe and, therefore, functional for everyday use.
My hope is that my work is enhancing the quality of life in many homes, stimulating after-dinner conversation, and promoting a closeness to the Earth and to all its inhabitants.
