iD Arts Magazine Jacksonville (iD): If you were to describe Terrill & Company (T&C) in just a few words that will make an impact on your first-time listeners, how would you?
Terrill & Company (T&C): We consider our music to be infectious, uplifting, and surprisingly refreshing to all types of listeners. And we definitely like to show up at unexpected places.
iD: We know that Jacksonville is T&C's home, but with the city not having any major industry connections, what keeps you here?
T&C: Other than most of our family living here, we enjoy the pace Jacksonville offers regarding the creative process. It is a place to polish our act before taking it on the road.
iD: Terrill, we learned that you write all of your own music. What feeds your inspiration?
T&C: My everyday life, encounters, and conversations. I don't really have a pattern of when I write; it is when my spirit moves me that I begin to write and compose. I possess no formal music training, can't read sheet music, and am puzzled if asked what note I just played. I simply follow my instincts and they haven't failed me to date.
iD: I have seen you perform on the guitar and keyboard; do you play, or plan to play, any other musical instruments?
T&C: Yes, I have played the keys, drums, bass guitar, and would like to learn the saxophone next. However, once we grow to a full band, you will only see me occasionally playing an instrument because I really enjoy mingling with the audience.
iD: Our first impression of T&C's music was anything but Christian. Your sound seems to be more Jazz based than Christian and is not stereotypical of either genre. Why is this?
T&C: The majority of my musical influences are considered to be secular artists that purposely tried to be different. Being a Christian artist wasn't originally part of my destiny.
iD: So did you start as a secular performer?
T&C: Prior to eight years ago, I was.

iD: What made you decide to make the switch to become a Christian artist?
T&C: We come from a large family that spent most Sundays in church. As a secular artist in my adolescent years, I experienced some personal struggles that tried my faith and ultimately led me back to my Christian roots. One day I had a personal encounter with the Lord. He led me to realize that secular music wasn't the best path for me. At that point, I thought my musical career was totally over. I had no idea that God had other plans for me and my brother. So, with a more positive direction driving us, here we are today.
iD: What are the main obstacles you face as a Christian artist and how do you deal with them?
T&C: One obstacle is convincing people that our music is meant for EVERYONE and not just churchgoers. Our music is created to inspire and uplift anyone who is going through struggles in life. We all know that nobody is immune to this. Another obstacle is finding venues that aren't concerned that Christian music will negatively affect their bottom line. T&C is all about "thinking outside the box" and appearing in places that are most unlikely expected, such as the downtown artwalk here in Jacksonville or BB Kings in Nashville, TN.
iD: What is your personal feel on the direction of music today?
T&C: There are too many copycats and not enough originality.
iD: What is T&C's latest project and what should your fans expect?
T&C: Our biggest project ever is the upcoming cd, "Uni-fyd." It has taken two and a half long and hard years, due to scheduling conflicts, to finish this project. "Uni-fyd" is a cd that has been recorded and re-recorded. We expect it to be our best work to date and we hope that all the late hours, sweat, tears, and frustration will have a monumental impact on everyone who hears it.
iD: When can we look forward to enjoying "Uni-fyd?"
T&C: The cd will be released in spring of 2008.
iD: Where can T&C fans purchase cds and learn more about iD's unexpected discovery: Terrill & Company?
T&C: Check out our official Web site at www.tedmusic.net or view us on MySpace at www.myspace.com/tedmusicnet. You can purchase our cds from our Web site. The "Tell It Like It Is" cd is available now. We also have MP3s online that provide a sample of our inspired sounds.
iD: We wish you the best and thank you for spreading your awesome sounds!
