About the Artist Born in Chattanooga, Tennessee, Mary Atwood has lived in Jacksonville for over 30 years. She developed an interest in photography as a small child using her parents Kodak Brownie camera. At the age of ten, she received her first camera, a Polaroid Swinger, as a Christmas gift. In the 1980s, she worked in the field of commercial photography and was an active member of the Professional Photographers Society of North Florida. She left that profession to raise a family and pursue other interests, but has recently returned to photography as an art form.
Artist Statement A photographer sees a world that others only look at. It is my belief that a good photograph is more than just the capturing of an image or a passing moment in time. A good photograph has the ability to speak a silent language, yet still leaves much for the viewer to interpret. My choices of subject matter reflect my strong interest in both nature and architecture. I am equally happy framing the perfect shot of a flower or searching for the right angle on an architectural detail. I also enjoy exploring the limitless possibilities for the manipulation of images available through digital techniques. Ansel Adams is quoted as having said "Dodging and burning are steps to take care of mistakes God made in establishing tonal relationships." The new options offered to the photographic artist extend that concept to many other such as color, texture, and lighting. A comment I often hear with regards to my work is that some pieces do not look like photographs.
