Artist Statement My very first piece of sculpture was a white paper triangle form, which won a prize when I was in college. I learned that craftsmanship was equally important as the concept or the design of the art itself. That's something I strive to do in all of my work. In this case, the art forms should be functional as well as decorative and the structures should stand on their own with the ability to work with any environment. Fine art can be functional as well as decorative or aesthetic. My creations have been used as furniture, children's toys, and awards. All art objects were created from abandoned and broken furnishings, wall mouldings, and canvases. This economical and recycled art concept provides a wealth of inspiration that gave me countless ideas to design assemblages that serve a number of purposes. These sculptures or assemblages were created from discarded metal and wood like douglas fir and poplar from pieces of furniture and used canvases. Each piece captured the signature moves or style of the dance. The Art Deco style and geometric forms highlight the shape and contours of the human form. Female Dancer, which was created and displayed first, inspired the growth and expansion of the series. You can also view my work on iD Arts Magazine Jacksonville's Graphic Design and Gallery3 pages.
